World Teachers' Day, observed annually on October 5, honors teachers' contributions, sacrifices, and human responsibilities. Today, many in Bangladesh remember the two courageous teachers from Uttara Milestone School and College: Maherin Chowdhury and Masuka Begum, whose bravery saved at least 20 students during the horrific July 21, 2025, plane crash, though they sacrificed their own lives.

On July 21, 2025, around noon, a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed onto the school campus. Fire spread instantly, filling classrooms with screams of terrified students.

Maherin Chowdhury rushed into a classroom, calming the children and ushering 20 to safety one by one. Despite severe burns, she continued until all were out. Her brother recounted, “Maherin said, ‘They’re like my children too; how could I leave them burning?’”

Masuka Begum also braved the flames to rescue students, suffering critical burns. She was hospitalized but succumbed later. Her heroism ensured many escaped unharmed.

Maherin and Masuka exemplified true teaching: not just lessons, but selfless protection and sacrifice.

Their courage inspires students as living proof that teachers are more than educators—they're guardians ready to lay down their lives.

UNESCO established World Teachers' Day in 1994, celebrated since 1995, to recognize teachers' pivotal role in education and development. It highlights their humanitarian, social, and pedagogical contributions, fostering awareness and appreciation in society.
