Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milan has announced that the schedule for the 2027 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations may undergo a potential revision following widespread public discussion and feedback from stakeholders. Addressing reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon following a high-level briefing with the Prime Minister, the minister clarified that the ministry is open to restructuring the timeline if students, parents, and academic authorities collectively demand it.

The initial scheduling decision, which positioned the commencement of the crucial public examinations on January 7, 2027, has recently sparked intense national debate across social media platforms, with critics arguing that the timeline moves the academic cycle forward too aggressively.

Ramadan Constraints Prompted the Initial Academic Acceleration

Explaining the institutional rationale behind the controversial January timeline, the Education Minister noted that the schedule was pushed forward by nearly a month specifically to avoid an administrative collision with the holy month of Ramadan.

The Ministry of Education had initially intended to conduct the public examinations during the final week of February. However, under that model, the entire examination timeline would split across the fasting period or spill entirely into the post-Ramadan window, significantly disrupting the student evaluation process. During rigorous preliminary consultations, core academic stakeholders had strongly favored wrapping up the exams prior to the commencement of Ramadan, prompting the ministry to formalize and publish the January 7 routine.

No Examinations Without Curriculum Completion, Assures Minister

Responding to growing anxieties regarding whether students would have sufficient time to absorb their coursework under the accelerated timeline, the Education Minister offered absolute institutional assurances that no academic compromised would be made.

Dr. Ehsanul Hoque Milan emphasized that under no circumstances would examinations be held without fully covering the mandatory national curriculum and syllabus. He added that the ministry has already streamlined internal academic tracking to ensure that schools complete the full syllabus well before the designated examination dates, guaranteeing that students suffer no preparation deficits. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also been thoroughly briefed on the syllabus coverage metrics and the ongoing public response.

A Broader Battle Against Chronic Session Jams

The minister underscored that the primary structural objective of the current administration is to systematically synchronize the academic calendar and completely eliminate debilitating session jams that plague the country's education sector.

The ministry is actively working to correct structural inefficiencies where a standard 16-year educational journey routinely stretches into 17 years, and 17-year tracks expand to 20 years. The government is heavily focused on adjusting this systemic two-year loss to safeguard the professional timelines of the youth.

Nevertheless, recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, the minister concluded that the government remains fully committed to democratic public opinion. The Ministry of Education is prepared to convene a fresh round of evaluation meetings with stakeholders to finalize an optimized, mutually agreeable schedule for the SSC 2027 examinations.
