Dhaka University VC Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan Resigns
Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, PhD, has resigned from the position of Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU). The resignation letter was submitted to Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haq Milon today, Sunday, 22 February 2026.
The development follows weeks of speculation and rumors that had circulated even before the 13th National General Election held on 12 February 2026. Professor Khan's personal secretary, Mohammad Firoz, confirmed to The Daily Campus that the formal resignation was handed over earlier today.
No official reason has been publicly disclosed by Professor Khan or the ministry at this time. However, the timing comes amid broader administrative transitions across several public universities following the formation of the new BNP-led government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Professor Khan had earlier expressed his desire to return to his role as an academician. He described his tenure as Vice-Chancellor as an important chapter and a meaningful opportunity to serve the great institution, especially in the period following the July uprising.
Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, an eminent academic in the fields of development studies, environmental governance, and social sciences, had been serving as DU Vice-Chancellor since 27 August 2024. His tenure saw both achievements and controversies, including debates over campus governance, student activism, academic freedom, and administrative reforms.
No information has been released yet regarding who will serve as acting Vice-Chancellor or when a new appointment will be announced. The position of DU Vice-Chancellor is one of the most influential roles in Bangladesh’s higher education sector.
This remains a developing story.
