How Much Will MPO-Listed Teachers and Employees’ Salaries Increase?

MPO-listed teachers and employees of private educational institutions are also set to come under the ninth pay scale alongside government employees. They are expected to receive salaries under the new pay structure from July 1, with changes also potentially coming to increments, retirement benefits, Pohela Boishakh and festival allowances. However, their allowance structure will not be the same as that of government employees.

A senior government source confirmed the development to The Daily Campus on Tuesday (September 1).

The government provides financial assistance to teachers and employees of private educational institutions for their salaries and allowances under the Monthly Pay Order, or MPO, system. MPO-listed employees receive 100 percent of the basic salary prescribed under the national pay scale, along with certain allowances, including medical allowance. Last year, the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and employees was increased to 15 percent of their basic salary.

According to the source, MPO-listed teachers and employees working at schools and colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions are covered by the national pay scale. As a result, they cannot be excluded from the ninth pay scale. Under the government's decision, they are also expected to receive the revised basic salary from July 1.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Daily Campus, “MPO-listed personnel will come under the ninth pay scale. Teachers will receive the new pay scale from the date it becomes effective for government employees.”

How the ninth pay scale will be implemented

The Cabinet approved the proposal for the ninth pay scale for government employees on Monday (August 31). Under the proposed structure, the basic salary for Grade 1 will increase to Tk 156,000 from Tk 78,000, while the lowest basic salary for Grade 20 will rise to Tk 20,000 from Tk 8,250.

Although the new pay scale is proposed to take effect from July 1, the increased benefits will be implemented in phases.

For employees from Grades 1 to 9, 40 percent of the increased basic salary will be added from July 1, 2026. A further 30 percent will be added in January 2027, followed by the remaining 30 percent in July 2027. This will complete the full increase in basic salary in three phases.

From January 2028, house rent and other allowances will be calculated based on the new basic salary.

For employees from Grades 10 to 20, 50 percent of the increased basic salary will be added from July 1, 2026. Another 25 percent will be added in January 2027 and the remaining 25 percent in July 2027. They will also receive house rent and other allowances based on the new basic salary from January 2028.

MPO-listed teachers and employees are expected to see their basic salaries increase under a similar arrangement. However, the government has not yet officially clarified how the revised pay scale will specifically apply to their allowances.

How much could MPO teachers earn?

The number of MPO-listed teachers and employees in Bangladesh is more than six lakh. Besides the government-funded portion, some teachers and employees receive additional payments from their respective institutions.

A lecturer at an MPO-listed college in the capital, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they currently receive a basic salary of Tk 22,000 at Grade 9, along with 15 percent house rent and Tk 500 as medical allowance.

The lecturer said they expect their basic salary to reach Tk 44,000 once the new pay scale is fully implemented in 2027-28, with the increase being introduced gradually. However, they said they were not yet certain how much their allowances would increase.

The government is expected to provide further details on the pay and allowance structure for MPO-listed teachers and employees once the relevant information is formally announced.
