Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday announced a two-day programme to mark the 20th anniversary of the killings during the ‘logi-boitha’ clashes in Dhaka on October 28, 2006.

In a statement, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar demanded the immediate arrest and trial of those involved in the killings, saying the perpetrators had yet to be brought to justice.

As part of the programme, Jamaat will organise a discussion meeting in Dhaka on October 27, with the party’s amir as the chief guest.

On October 28, the party will hold protests, discussion meetings and prayer sessions across the country.

Parwar described the violence involving sticks and oars on Dhaka’s streets on October 28, 2006, as a dark chapter in the country’s political history.

He alleged that the killings and the ensuing chaos had paved the way for two decades of authoritarian rule, the erosion of democracy and the deprivation of citizens’ rights.

Jamaat called on its organisational units to implement the programmes and urged people from all walks of life to participate.

The violence on October 28, 2006, widely known as the ‘logi-boitha’ clashes, erupted amid a political standoff over the chief adviser of the caretaker government. Activists of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance clashed with supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led four-party alliance.

Clashes involving Awami League activists and supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in the Paltan area left several people dead and scores injured.
