High Court Grants Bail to Former MP Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman
The High Court has granted bail to Jamaat-e-Islami leader, former MP and freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case filed over alleged disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Md Zakir Hossain granted the bail on Sunday (November 1). Akhtaruzzaman's lawyer, Shishir Monir, announced the development in a Facebook post on Sunday morning.
“Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has been granted bail. Alhamdulillah,” he wrote.
Earlier, on October 26, Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 rejected his bail petition. His lawyers subsequently filed a fresh bail application with the relevant High Court division on Sunday morning.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from his residence in the DOHS area of Dhaka Cantonment on the afternoon of October 2. The following day, a court granted police one day's remand for questioning. After the remand, on October 4, the court rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to the case allegations, tensions arose at the airport on October 1 over alleged mismanagement, a shortage of luggage trolleys, delays in receiving baggage and the unavailability of Zamzam water. The situation reportedly escalated into threats and intimidation.
A case was subsequently filed against Akhtaruzzaman over allegations of creating disorder at the airport, obstructing government duties and harassing a security official.
