The Qatar-provided Airbus A319 air ambulance, equipped as a flying ICU, landed on Monday with a full medical crew. It will stop in Doha en route to The London Clinic, where Khaleda received treatment earlier this year.
BNP Standing Committee member and Khaleda's personal physician Prof Dr A Z M Jahid Hossain, who briefed the media yesterday, confirmed the departure: "All arrangements are complete. The 14-member team includes specialists from Johns Hopkins and London Clinic. We pray for her safe journey and full recovery."
Tarique Rahman, BNP Acting Chairman, and his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman along with a medical board are coordinating from London. Khaleda Zia’s daughter-in-law Dr. Zubaida Rahman is set to return from London and then accompany her. Syeda Sharmila Rahman (wife of the late Arafat Rahman Koko) will also travel with her.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare on 23 November with a lung infection, which has worsened into sepsis, mitral stenosis, acute pancreatitis, fluid overload, and kidney failure requiring daily dialysis. Doctors reported slight improvement on Saturday, when she spoke briefly, but stress the next 48 hours are critical.
The government has heightened security around the airport and flight path. BNP appealed for public prayers and urged avoiding the hospital to prevent disruptions.
This marks Khaleda's second medical evacuation to London; she spent 117 days there from January to May this year before returning. Her family expressed gratitude to Qatar's Emir for the assistance.
