The victim of the fatal incident near Farmgate Metro Station has been identified as Abul Kalam, a resident of Ishurkatia in Nadiya, Shariatpur district.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Zone Additional Commissioner Md Akkas Ali confirmed the identity based on a passport found at the scene. The man, aged around 35-40, died instantly when a 40-50 kg bearing pad (spring) dislodged from a metro pillar and struck his head while he walked on the footpath.

The accident occurred at 12:15 pm on Sunday (October 26) in front of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, adjacent to Farmgate Station. The pad then crashed into a nearby betel nut and singara shop, shattering the glass and injuring two people inside.

Due to the mishap, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) suspended all metro operations from 12:30 pm. General Manager (Operations) Iftekhar Hossain stated: "A bearing pad fell, causing the accident. Services remain halted pending assessment."

This marks the second such failure: On September 18, a pad fell in Khamarbari, disrupting train movement.

Police are investigating the structural lapse, with DMTCL yet to issue a full statement on safety measures.
