Egypt national football team coach Hossam Hassan has dedicated his team’s historic World Cup knockout victory over Australia to the people of Palestine. The gesture sparked widespread celebrations across the Arab world, particularly in the war-torn Gaza Strip, where fans gathered to watch the match against a backdrop of bombed buildings and makeshift tents.

Egypt held their nerve to defeat Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in a cagey Round of 32 clash at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday (July 3). This marks the Pharaohs' first-ever knockout victory in World Cup history, setting up a highly anticipated Round of 16 showdown against reigning champions Argentina.

Following the winning spot-kick, coach Hossam Hassan carried both the Egyptian and Palestinian flags onto the pitch as the entire squad collectively performed Sujud (prostration) on the ground to celebrate.

Speaking to reporters in the post-match press conference, Hassan expressed his solidarity:

"May God grant them [the Palestinians] victory, may God have mercy on their martyrs. I’m saying to them: I’m dedicating this victory to the Egyptian people and Palestinian people, those kind and honourable people."

Images and social media footage from Gaza showed thousands of displaced Palestinians cheering from their tents, with children painting Egyptian flags on their faces, finding a brief moment of joy amidst ongoing hardship.

The match itself was a tense affair. Emam Ashour initially handed Egypt the lead in the 13th minute with a well-placed header. However, Australia found a lifeline ten minutes into the second half when an own goal by Mohamed Hany leveled the scores at 1-1, pushing the game into extra time.

During the penalty shootout, Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington failed to convert from 12 yards. Egypt's Hossam Abdelmaguid then stepped up to calmly roll in the decisive winning spot-kick, sealing the historic win.

Hours prior to kick-off, the Egyptian camp faced a brief distraction when social media footage went viral showing an altercation at the team hotel. The Egyptian national team stated that a Dallas police officer had pushed team director Ibrahim Hassan and player Trezeguet while they were attempting to take a photograph with a fan.

The Dallas Police Department later issued a statement clarifying that the misunderstanding was resolved amicably at the scene. Egypt will now shift their complete focus to their upcoming Round of 16 clash against Lionel Messi's Argentina in Atlanta.
