In a major logistical and diplomatic shift just weeks ahead of kickoff, the Iranian national football team has officially decided to move its FIFA World Cup 2026 base camp from the United States to Mexico. The decision, which has already received formal approval from football's global governing body FIFA, comes in the wake of escalating geopolitical friction involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The Iranian delegation was originally scheduled to set up its training headquarters and operational base in Tucson, Arizona. Under the newly approved plan, Team Melli will instead base themselves across the border in Tijuana, Mexico.

The Mexican border city was strategically selected by the Iran Football Federation due to its close geographical proximity to the United States, ensuring that the squad faces minimal travel fatigue when commuting to their designated Group G fixtures on American soil.

In an official statement released on Saturday, Iran Football Federation President Mehdi Taj confirmed that FIFA had sanctioned the relocation following a series of high-level discussions with tournament organizers. Taj indicated that the transition was necessary to ensure the safety, focus, and smooth preparation of the athletic delegation in an increasingly volatile political climate.

The relocation adds a unique layer of complexity to the historic 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Jointly hosted by 16 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the upcoming tournament marks the first time a World Cup is being shared among three sovereign nations. It also debuts a massive competitive expansion, featuring a 48-team bracket playing a record total of 104 matches over the course of the tournament.
