Will Neymar Miss World Cup 2026 After Fresh Injury Blow?
Severe concerns have gripped Brazilian football fans following a fresh injury setback for superstar forward Neymar Jr, coming just two days after his highly anticipated call-up to Brazil's official 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The 34-year-old forward was forced to sit out Santos FC’s recent CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana fixture against San Lorenzo, which ended in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
Medical evaluation reveals minor calf edema
According to an official statement released by Santos' head of medical services, Rodrigo Zogaib, comprehensive diagnostic scans revealed a small 2-millimeter edema (fluid swelling) in Neymar's right calf.
Despite the alarming timing of the injury right before the global showpiece in North America, the club's medical team has heavily downplayed the severity of the issue, classifying it as a mild strain.
"Neymar has a minor calf injury, an edema," Dr. Rodrigo Zogaib explained during a media briefing. "However, according to our structured rehabilitation planning, his physical progress will comfortably allow him to be fully fit next week, right in time to join up with the national team perimeter without any legal or physical restrictions."
Ancelotti and CBF monitor recovery at Granja Comary
The injury has added immense strategic pressure on Brazil's newly appointed head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, who finalized the World Cup selection on May 18.
Currently, Neymar is undergoing intensive, isolated physical therapy at the Rei Pele Training Center, overseen closely by his personal medical staff alongside coordinators from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
While the 5-to-10-day recovery window indicates that Neymar's overall World Cup participation is not under immediate jeopardy, team insiders suggest he will likely be rested for Brazil's upcoming international friendly against Panama on May 31 to avoid a premature relapse. Brazil is scheduled to officially kick off its Group C World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 14 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
