Ronaldo, 41, Leads Portugal into Historic Sixth World Cup
Veteran striker Cristiano Ronaldo will officially lead Portugal into the 2026 FIFA World Cup after national team coach Roberto Martinez named the 41-year-old football icon in his final squad on Tuesday. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, who currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, is poised to create football history by appearing at a record-breaking sixth World Cup tournament.
Despite being the all-time leading men's international goalscorer with 143 goals to his name, Ronaldo and Portugal have never won the prestigious global competition. The tournament setup could pave the way for another high-profile showdown against his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who is also set to feature in his sixth World Cup campaign after guiding Argentina to the championship four years ago in Qatar.
The veteran Portuguese forward cleared a major administrative hurdle after avoiding a potential three-match suspension, despite receiving a red card for an elbowing incident against the Republic of Ireland during Portugal's final qualification match. Spanish tactician Roberto Martinez opted for a formidable 26-man primary roster with no massive surprises, while including an additional player in the group to round out a 27-man travelling contingent.
The highly competitive squad includes Ronaldo's Al Nassr teammate Joao Felix, alongside a powerful contingent from Paris Saint-Germain featuring Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos. The roster is further bolstered by Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes and a strong Manchester City group led by Bernardo Silva.
Addressing media queries at a press briefing, Martinez clarified that he does not see any necessity to handle the five-time Ballon d'Or winner differently due to his advanced age. The head coach explained that in his experience, players at a World Cup do not necessarily mirror their usual club form or standard age-related performance patterns. He emphasized that the group remains completely focused, physically prepared for the tournament demands, and ready to navigate their operational needs on a day-to-day basis.
Ronaldo had hinted last year that this upcoming World Cup would mark the definitive end of his international career. He was visibly emotional last weekend following Al Nassr's defeat against Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final, but Martinez reassured fans that an arduous club season would not affect the forward's international drive. The coach stated that transitioning into the national team environment injects fresh energy and enables players to mentally reset from domestic club outcomes.
Martinez also confirmed the inclusion of Genclerbirligi goalkeeper Ricardo Velho as a specialized fourth choice, noting that Velho will only be formally registered if one of the primary shot-stoppers sustains an injury. In a moving tribute, the manager stated that late striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car crash in July 2025, remains with the squad in spirit, calling his strength and memory the team's symbolic extra player.
In the immediate build-up to the showpiece event, Portugal will fine-tune their tactics in international friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria. The Vatreni's World Cup Group K campaign will officially kick off against DR Congo on June 17, followed by group stage fixtures against Uzbekistan on June 23 and Colombia on June 27.
