A student of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) was injured when a running ceiling fan suddenly fell from the ceiling in a classroom.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday (28 March) during a class of the 2023-24 session (23 series). The injured student is Mushrakul Alam Farhad. The fan blade struck him on the neck, causing injury. He was given first aid with the help of the class teacher.

It is worth noting that classes at RUET resumed today after a long holiday of nearly one and a half months. The equipment in the classrooms was being used without any recent inspection or maintenance, according to allegations raised by students.

Preliminary suspicion points to a problem with the fan’s nuts and bolts as the possible cause of the accident.

Following the incident, concern has spread among the students. They have demanded regular monitoring of classrooms and other campus infrastructure to prevent similar accidents in the future.

When contacted, Head of the ECE department Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain said: “We regularly monitor all equipment in the classrooms. The fans were installed only a few days ago. It is likely that a problem with the nuts and bolts caused this. We have already started re-inspecting all rooms.”
