Creating Wider Pathways to Public University Admission for All Curriculum Students
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced plans to form a committee to expand admission opportunities for English-medium students at public universities and ensure a fair and inclusive environment in higher education.
He made the announcement at a seminar organised by the executive committee of the Alliance of Private English Medium Schools at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka at 4:30pm on Sunday (October 11).
The minister said the University Grants Commission (UGC) would lead the proposed committee, which would work to resolve the issue of English-medium students' admission to public universities from the next academic year.
“After receiving the committee's report, we will analyse it and make a decision on the next steps,” he said.
Dr Milon also said around 120,000 students sit for O-Level and A-Level examinations, but there is no curriculum for them in this regard. He said schools needed to work on the issue.
UGC member Professor Dr Abdullah Al-Mamun, Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Alamzaddeed Alfasane, Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rais Uddin, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Khairul Islam, and Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam attended the seminar.
Members of the executive committee responsible for organising the seminar included Mohammad Morshedul Islam, principal of European Standard School; Majidul Haque Liton, founder of Wisdom International School and College; Yasmin Habib, principal of Sunnydale School; Mohammad Anisur Rahman Sohag, founder, chairman and head of school at Evercare International School's Mirpur and Bashundhara campuses; Munize Manzur, principal of Sunbeams School; Syeda Madiha Murshed, managing director of Scholastica School; Mrs Zinat Ahmed, founder and principal of South Breeze School; and Syed Parvez Ahsan, director of European Standard School.
