A student of the Physics Department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was killed in a motorcycle accident on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway early Sunday.

The deceased, Sadman Rahman, was a student of the 2025-26 academic session. The accident occurred at around 12:15am on Sunday (October 11), in front of the Topobon residential area near the university.

Sadman was from Madhya Bhabanipur in Rajbari district and lived in a student mess in the university-adjacent Tilargaon area.

According to eyewitnesses and fellow students, Sadman was travelling by motorcycle towards the Madina Market area after spending time with friends near the university's main gate on Saturday night. Near a speed breaker, he lost control of the motorcycle, which struck a road divider, leaving him with severe head injuries.

After the accident, people at the scene informed Sadman's classmates and senior university students by phone. They arrived and initially took him to a private hospital near the university before transferring him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Mohidul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said the motorcycle had struck the road divider after the rider lost control near a speed breaker.

Police went to the hospital after receiving the information, prepared an inquest report and inspected the accident site, he said. The incident initially appeared to be an accident, he added.

Islam further said Sadman's body was handed over to his family without an autopsy after they applied to the district magistrate. An unnatural death case will be filed over the incident, he added.

SUST Proctor Mokhlesur Rahman said the university community was mourning Sadman's death and that his guardians had been informed.

He said the body was sent home without an autopsy with the approval of the additional district magistrate. Two university students had accompanied the vehicle carrying the body, he added.
