Metro rail closed after fatal Farmgate incident
Metro rail operations in the capital have been suspended following a deadly accident in Farmgate. A bearing pad (spring) used to dampen vibrations dislodged during train movement and fell, killing a pedestrian on the spot. The incident occurred around 12:15 pm on Sunday (October 26) in front of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, adjacent to Farmgate Metro Station.
Metro rail authorities confirmed the suspension due to a mechanical fault, effective from 12:30 pm. Further decisions will be announced after assessing the situation.
Tejgaon Police Station OC Mobarak Hossain said: “We’ve heard a bearing pad fell and killed a pedestrian instantly. His identity is still unknown.”
Eyewitnesses described a barrel-shaped spring weighing 40-50 kg falling and striking a man (aged ~35-40) walking on the footpath with a bag. The impact crushed his head before the object crashed into a nearby betel nut and singara shop, shattering the glass front and injuring two people inside.
The victim died immediately. Police and fire service recovered the body and secured the area. An investigation into the structural failure is underway.
