DUCSU Funds Missing? Treasurer: 'Spent Tk1.38cr'
For 28 years, DU students have paid fees for Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), but leaders demanded an account of the missing funds today. Treasurer Prof Jahangir Alam said: "We've received Tk1.11 crore; spent Tk1.38 crore."
When DUCSU leaders asked how it was spent, he replied: "On elections." Protesters retorted: "Can't spend DUCSU money like that—it's for DUCSU."
Demanding full DUCSU and hall fund accounts, budget transparency, and a drug-free, beggar-free safe campus, students led by DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary AB Yubayer besieged the Registrar Building this afternoon, Sunday (October 26). They staged a sit-in at the Treasurer's office with Proctor present.
Treasurer clarified: "Financial matters are policy-level. DUCSU income isn't separate—part of university revenue, including UGC grants. Spent per UGC budget format."
Leaders shot back: "We don't understand policy—show DUCSU money." He added: "DU has no budget autonomy. Low revenue; rely on govt funds. Asked Tk1,200cr, got ~Tk900cr. Even cutting costs leaves Tk100cr deficit. Told to boost income."
Protesters insisted: "Students paid for DUCSU—return it." Treasurer: "Discuss with UGC."
The verbal clash amid the sit-in highlights ongoing demands for accountability.
