BCB Director Resigns a Day After Winning Election
In a sudden turn of events, Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto, who was elected uncontested as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from the Rajshahi region, has resigned from his post just a day after the board's general election. The election of the BCB Board of Directors was held on Sunday, June 7.
On Monday, June 8, Simanto officially submitted his resignation letter to BCB President Tamim Iqbal. In his letter, Simanto, who is the son of the State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Mir Shah Alam MP, cited pressing business commitments as the primary reason for stepping down.
Family Business Obligations and Ethical Stance
In the formal resignation letter, Simanto noted that while he was honored to be elected unopposed as a director representing the Rajshahi bloc, recent changes in his family's operational responsibilities required his full attention. He explained that since his father currently serves as a state minister in the government, the critical management of their widespread family business and commercial enterprises has been entirely entrusted to him.
Given these heavy commercial obligations, Simanto stated that it would not be possible for him to properly discharge the demanding duties required by a prestigious and vital national institution like the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He emphasized that out of a deep sense of accountability and keeping the ultimate interests of the cricket board in mind, he decided to voluntarily step aside from the director's position. He requested the BCB President to formally accept his resignation with immediate effect.
Pre-Election Intentions and Official Departure
The departure brings an unexpected vacancy to the newly formed cricket board administration. Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto had secured his seat automatically as a director from the Rajshahi regional constituency after emerging as the sole valid candidate, negating the need for a ballot battle during Sunday's framework.
However, insider reports indicate that this move was not entirely unforeseen. Even before the formal election proceedings concluded, Simanto had privately expressed his reluctance and lack of desire to take up the executive responsibilities of the director's post due to his pre-existing corporate workload. True to his initial reservations, he formalized his departure by delivering his official resignation papers within 24 hours of the election results being finalized.
