BGB Deployed at Dhaka University
High tension swept across the Dhaka University (DU) campus on Tuesday (July 14) as paramilitary forces from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to maintain order. The heavy security mobilization followed a volatile face-off between law enforcement and protesting Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidates, who took up positions at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milon.
According to the latest field reports on Tuesday afternoon, the demonstrating college students blocked the critical road stretching from Nilkhet to TSC, chanting slogans and continuing their demonstrations. A large contingent of police personnel took up positions directly opposite the protesters in a tense standoff, while leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were seen lining up on one side of the street.
Earlier in the day, students from various colleges blocked the busy Science Laboratory intersection for nearly an hour. The flash blockade was organized to protest the decision to hold the HSC exams on Monday despite torrential monsoon rains and widespread urban waterlogging, which left hundreds of candidates suffering across the capital.
Following the Science Lab demonstration, the students marched in a procession toward the university campus through TSC. At around 1:15 PM, police intercepted and dispersed the marchers near the Vice-Chancellor's residence, prompting the students to retreat and regroup on the Nilkhet-TSC road, leading to the direct face-off. In an effort to keep the situation from spiraling out of control, the administration deployed the BGB on the campus to assist local police and security forces in maintaining law and order.
