‘Bangladesh’s Education System Responsible for My Death’—Student’s Suicide Note
In a heartbreaking incident, Dhrubajit Karmakar (22), a student at Mymensingh Engineering College, took his own life after leaving a suicide note in his personal diary that read, “Bangladesh’s education system is responsible for my death.” The incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 18, has sparked widespread shock and concern both within and outside the college.
The tragedy took place around 1:00 PM in Room 307 of the Amar Ekushey Hall at Mymensingh Engineering College. In his suicide note, Dhrubajit wrote, “Sorry, Ma, Baba. I, Dhrubajit, seek forgiveness from everyone. The PIN for my card is (.......). Please give the money to my mother. Bangladesh’s education system is responsible for my death. Next time, I’ll study Pharmacy. This pressure was impossible for me to bear. Farewell. Hare Krishna.”
Dhrubajit, son of Monotosh Karmakar and Supta Karmakar from Bijoypur village in Fulgazi Upazila, Feni, was a third-year student in the second semester of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at Mymensingh Engineering College. The college principal, Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, confirmed the incident.
According to the principal, Dhrubajit had an examination on the day of the incident. During the exam, he was caught with unauthorized materials and was expelled from the examination hall by the invigilating teachers after his answer script was confiscated. “Following this, he returned to his room and took his life,” said Dr. Rahman. “We immediately rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead.” Confirming the authenticity of the suicide note, the principal added, “Dhrubajit had been showing signs of depression for some time. Being caught with unauthorized materials during the exam likely pushed him into further emotional distress. This is an extremely tragic and heartbreaking incident. His family has been informed.”
Dhrubajit’s classmates revealed that after being caught and facing potential expulsion, he pleaded tearfully with the teachers. Subsequently, he returned to his room, where he used a gamcha (towel) tied to a ceiling fan to take his life. At the time, his roommates were all at the examination hall.
Inspector Sajib Kumar Baroi of Kotwali Model Police Station stated, “Upon receiving the news, we sent a police team to the scene. The body is currently at the hospital morgue, and legal proceedings are underway.”
