Despite growing medical awareness, mental health issues remain widely stigmatized and misunderstood in society, often leading families to attribute complex conditions like Schizophrenia to supernatural causes rather than seeking timely psychiatric care, experts have warned.

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder where affected individuals experience distorted perceptions of reality, often suffering from delusions, auditory or visual hallucinations, or the belief that unseen forces are controlling them. Mental health professionals stress that while symptoms vary among individuals, the condition can be effectively managed through regular medical treatment and strong familial support.

A recent account shared by a patient's family illustrates how the illness often unfolds unnoticed. The patient gradually developed unfounded suspicions toward family members, eventually talking to herself, singing alone, and perceiving non-existent entities. Relatives initially attributed her behavior to supernatural phenomena and sought religious remedies before a medical diagnosis confirmed Schizophrenia.

Physicians emphasize that while there is currently no permanent cure for Schizophrenia, continuous treatment, strict adherence to prescribed medication, and routine psychiatric consultation allow patients to lead normal lives. Conversely, social isolation or abruptly stopping medication without medical advice significantly increases the risk of symptom relapse.

Speaking on the matter, former Head of the Department at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Prof. Dr. Md. Tajul Islam, underscored the vital role of the family environment. He warned that hostility, excessive criticism, or humiliation directed at the patient severe the condition and heighten relapse risks, making psychological support and empathetic care just as crucial as pharmaceutical treatment.
