Two of three new universities gear up for admissions; Bogura uncertain
Of the three newest public universities to receive teaching permission, Naogaon University has been cleared to open two departments under two faculties for the 2025-26 session, while Meherpur University authorities hope to start classes this year. Bogura Science and Technology University, however, remains without approval, likely delaying its academic launch to the next session.
Naogaon University
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved opening:
- Department of Law under the Faculty of Law
- Department of Accounting and Information Systems under the Faculty of Business Studies
A UGC notice signed by Additional Director Dr Md Mahibul Ahsan on Wednesday (10 December) granted conditional permission for student intake in the current session.
Conditions include:
- Following recommendations of any UGC inspection team
- Forming necessary committees as per the Naogaon University Act-2023
- Preparing and approving curricula through the Academic Council
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hasanat Ali told The Daily Campus today (Saturday): “We will admit students this session. UGC has not yet specified the admission process, but we expect guidelines soon and will follow them.”
Meherpur University
Authorities are optimistic about starting classes in 2025-26 after UGC gave the green light for two departments under one faculty. The exact departments are yet to be finalised.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sheikh Bakhtiar Uddin said: “We hope to launch academic activities this year. A meeting with UGC is scheduled next week, and a decision on admissions may come then.”
The university, originally named Mujibnagar University before being renamed Meherpur University on 16 January 2025, is using Meherpur Government College as a temporary campus. Teacher and staff recruitment remains pending.
Bogura University of Science and Technology
UGC has deferred approval, stating a site inspection of laboratories and infrastructure is required first.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Kudrat-e-Jahan said proposals for high-demand subjects like Automobile Engineering and Artificial Intelligence were submitted, adding: “Even if not this year, we expect approval next session.”
Students, guardians and stakeholders expressed disappointment over the delayed start at Bogura, especially after the current session’s admission activities are already underway elsewhere.
