Purpose of Establishing IML Institute Not Yet Fulfilled: Education Minister
Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haq Milon has stated that the original purpose for establishing the International Mother Language Institute (Amay) has not yet been realized. He made this remark as chief guest at a program organized on Saturday (21 February) to mark Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day 2026.
The minister said: “The activities of the International Mother Language Institute began in 2010. Now it is 2026; in 16 years, only 4 languages have been added. Progress is very slow. I don't know why it's so slow. However, we should take pride that Bangla is internationally recognized and this day is celebrated globally. Bangla is the seventh largest language in the world.”
Dr. Milon emphasized: “The responsibility with which Amay was established must be fulfilled by this institution. No matter what sacrifices are required, progress must be achieved.” He noted the institute lacks sufficient budget and expressed hope that UNESCO would encourage it through funding support.
State Minister for Education Bobby Hajjaj was present as special guest, along with UNESCO's Head of Education in Bangladesh Norihide Furukawa. Welcome address was given by Amay Director Professor Dr. Muhammad Asaduzzaman. The keynote paper was presented by former professor of Modern Language Institute Abul Monsur Muhammad Abu Musa. Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division Rehana Parveen presided over the event.
In a language-related competition held during the program, six winning students from two categories received medals, crests, certificates, and cash prizes.
