3rd Youth Forum at NSU Highlights Biotechnology for Food Security

The 3rd Youth Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology commenced today at North South University (NSU), co-organized by NSU, OIC-COMSTECH, and the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS). The event gathered policymakers, academics, and international representatives to underscore biotechnology’s role in tackling global food security challenges.
The inaugural session featured distinguished guests, including Chief Guest Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Advisor to the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Science and Technology; Special Guests M.A. Kashem, Aziz Al Kaiser, Benajir Ahmed, and Yeasmin Kamal, Members of NSU’s Board of Trustees; H.E. Ambassador Khusrav Noziri, Assistant Director-General of IOFS; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH; Prof. Dr. Hafizur Rahman, COMSTECH Focal Person for Bangladesh; Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of NSU; and Prof. Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer and Pro-Vice Chancellor (In-Charge) of NSU.
The program began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthem and a presentation on NSU’s achievements and global partnerships.
In his welcome address, Prof. Dr. Hafizur Rahman said, “Biotechnology can reshape how we address agricultural and nutritional challenges. Our youth must lead this journey, transforming knowledge into practical solutions for humanity.”
Chief Guest Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed highlighted Bangladesh’s progress, stating, “Our genome scientists have driven food self-sufficiency. Biotechnology will enhance nutrition, resilience, and agricultural productivity. We need more investment in education, research, and adaptive technologies to secure our future.”
H.E. Ambassador Khusrav Noziri emphasized global cooperation, saying, “Food security demands collective action. This forum fosters knowledge-sharing among young scientists. Genome technology must be applied ethically and transparently to build public trust.”
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary stressed youth empowerment, noting, “Food security is a major challenge, and science is our solution. Empowering youth with tools and opportunities is key to a sustainable future.”
Aziz Al Kaiser, Chairman of NSU’s Board of Trustees, said, “Biotechnology opens new pathways for food security. This forum reflects NSU’s commitment to research excellence. Young researchers will drive sustainable solutions for farmers.”
M.A. Kashem, NSU Board of Trustees member, remarked, “NSU’s vision is to foster innovation and collaboration. This platform drives agricultural development through research.”
Benajir Ahmed urged collective action, stating, “We have the resources to make a difference. The OIC should prioritize biotechnology and food security initiatives for sustainable development.”
Session Chair Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “Genome editing is a powerful tool for safe, sustainable food. This forum nurtures a generation ready to tackle food security challenges.”
Prof. Abdur Rob Khan concluded with a vote of thanks, stating, “Today’s dialogue sets the stage for collaboration between academia and global organizations for a food-secure future.”
The session ended with a group photo and networking, setting the tone for the two-day forum (13-14 September 2025). Technical sessions with speakers from Turkey, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan will promote knowledge-sharing in agricultural biotechnology.
