BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has warned that introducing a Proportional Representation (PR) system in Bangladesh could lead to serious internal divisions and benefit authoritarian forces.

Speaking at a meeting in Laxmipur’s Dattapara Union on Thursday, Annie said, “What is being called the PR system, Tarique Rahman has clearly stated that while this model exists in many European countries, it is not suitable for Bangladesh’s political context. Adopting such a system now would create significant division among ourselves and give fascist forces a chance to take advantage.”

He further stated, “The Awami League regime, responsible for destroying the country's political structure and holding the administration hostage, must not be given any more opportunities. Bringing them to justice is our first priority.”

Referring to a recent meeting in London between Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, Annie said, “Their conversation was based on national interest, not personal matters. That meeting has generated respect and hope among the people, giving us courage and renewed determination.”

Looking ahead to the next general election, Annie added, “If a free and fair election can be held in a suitable timeframe, perhaps in February before Ramadan, it would be festive, spontaneous, and meet public expectations. In such a case, BNP would fully cooperate with the government.”
