The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for choosing to clean canals and drains through voluntary labor instead of holding a pre-announced rally for its 47th founding anniversary, citing concerns over traffic congestion and public inconvenience in the capital.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 2, signed by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, the police commended BNP’s initiative. The release stated that organizing programs that block roads in a densely populated city like Dhaka can paralyze the entire city, causing significant public hardship. “By considering public inconvenience, BNP’s creative and people-friendly initiative will undoubtedly set a commendable precedent, establishing a best practice for political programs,” the statement read.
The DMP highlighted a meeting held on August 23 at its headquarters with leaders from 32 active political parties and alliances in Dhaka, both at the central and metropolitan levels. During the meeting, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, NDC, urged political parties to hold programs in alternative, less disruptive locations to minimize public inconvenience.
The press release noted that BNP’s innovative decision reflects a positive response to this call. By avoiding busy roads and adopting a constructive program, BNP has prioritized civic welfare and the city’s normal operations. The DMP extended heartfelt thanks and appreciation to BNP for this considerate approach.
