On a 64-square battlefield of black and white, a silent war unfolded—not with swords or gunfire, but with the depth of thought, the test of patience, and the precision of strategy. Each move was a calculated strike to outmaneuver the opponent, every step a bold advance toward victory.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) hosted the ‘First CUET International Rapid Rating Open Chess Tournament 2025’ at its Student-Teacher Center. Organized by the CUET Chess Club, this inaugural internationally recognized event drew over 140 players from across Bangladesh, showcasing a thrilling display of intellectual prowess.

The tournament was inaugurated by CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiya and FIDE Zone 3.2 President Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim. The competition kicked off at 9 AM, with participants ranging in age from 9 to 70 years, reflecting the universal appeal of chess.

Sanctioned by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the tournament was officiated by experienced FIDE arbiters and conducted in the Swiss League format, featuring eight rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move.

After a day of intense mental duels, the winners were announced in the evening. Subrata Biswas emerged as the champion, with Md. Shawkat Bin Usman Shaun as the runner-up. Two CUET students secured spots in the top ten. Prizes worth approximately 35,000 BDT were distributed across various categories, handed over by distinguished guests.

Taisir Al Adib, a student from Municipal School, shared, “The atmosphere was fantastic, and playing alongside so many competitors was an incredible experience. I’m grateful to the organizers for fueling our passion for chess.” A parent attending with their child remarked, “The CUET Chess Club’s organization was commendable. The briefing was clear, the discipline was notable, and the review board was highly effective. They even provided chocolates for the kids. I also appreciate the role of the Chittagong Chess Academy.”

Alif Hossain, President of the CUET Chess Club, expressed pride in the event: “Hosting such a large-scale chess tournament at CUET is a matter of great honor. This will not only inspire chess culture at CUET but also encourage students nationwide to embrace the game.”

The organizers emphasized that chess is more than a game—it’s a mental exercise that sharpens focus, patience, and analytical skills. Every move is a duel of wits, where a single misstep can unravel a carefully crafted strategy, and a perfect play can seal victory. They believe these young players will one day carry Bangladesh’s flag to the global stage, shining as grandmasters and elevating the nation’s name.
