BUET Student Nibir’s Three-Year-Old Post Predicting His Death Goes Viral
Asif Asmat Nibir, a meritorious student of the 21st batch of the Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), passed away on Friday (13 March) after a long battle with cancer. Following his death, a Facebook post he wrote exactly three years ago has gone viral.
In the post dated 5 March 2023, Nibir reflected on his eating habits and how they might increase his cancer risk. He wrote:
“Most of the time when there is class, I have breakfast with butter bun, which contains carcinogenic chemicals. At lunch and dinner, I eat chicken with rice, which has two and a half times the tolerable level of lead (a carcinogen) in the human body. In the afternoon, I eat deep-fried items like singara, which contain trans fat. If 2% of the daily calorie intake comes from trans fat, the risk of cancer increases by 23%.”
He concluded the post with a poignant line: “When someone asks, ‘Where do you see yourself in 20 years?’ I silently say to myself, ‘In the grave.’”
Tragically, his words proved prophetic — three years later, he succumbed to cancer.
Nibir hailed from Chuadanga. He studied at Victoria Jubilee Government High School and Chuadanga Government College before pursuing engineering at BUET. He was also involved in writing and translation.
Multiple BUET sources confirmed that Nibir had been suffering from Metastatic Adenocarcinoma, a complex form of cancer, for a long time. In recent months, countless people — both in Bangladesh and abroad — came forward with prayers and financial support to help with his treatment. Despite all efforts, the country lost a promising engineer.
Students from BUET Batch 24 issued a condolence message: “After enduring the severe trial of cancer for a long time with patience and struggle, he has answered the call of the Almighty Lord and departed from this world, leaving behind the attachments of life. Undoubtedly, every soul shall taste death, and to Allah is our return.
On behalf of BUET Batch 24, we express profound grief at his passing and extend heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, classmates, and loved ones. We pray to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased, accept his sufferings as expiation for sins, expand and illuminate his grave, and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. May Allah grant his family and dear ones the strength to bear this sorrow with patience. We request everyone to pray sincerely for the departed soul.”
