Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 21 Years in 3 Plot Corruption Cases
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in prison in three graft cases related to irregularities in government land allocation in Purbachal New Town.
Justice Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the verdict in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and 44 others.
The cases, lodged in January 2025, allege Hasina and her family misused power to illegally obtain six 10-katha plots in Purbachal's diplomatic zone through RAJUK, despite ineligibility.
Hasina, tried in absentia from exile in India, was convicted alongside Joy and Putul, who received similar sentences. The court also ordered asset confiscation.
ACC public prosecutor Mir Ahammed Salam had sought life imprisonment for all accused, citing abuse of authority and corruption worth millions.
The ruling marks the latest in a series of convictions against Hasina, who was sentenced to death on 17 November 2025 by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity during the 2024 student uprising. She faces multiple other cases, including contempt (six months in July 2025).
Hasina's family dismissed the verdict as "politically motivated," echoing their stance on previous rulings. The ACC hailed it as a step toward accountability.
