Culture Ministry Proposes Reintroducing Music Teachers in Primary Schools
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has proposed to the Ministry of Education to reintroduce the appointment of music teachers in government primary schools, said Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists in the capital on Tuesday (31 March).
The minister said: “The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has proposed to the Ministry of Education the appointment of music teachers in primary schools.”
He added: “In the proposal, it has been stated that the Ministry of Cultural Affairs will select the music teachers, while the Ministry of Education will bear the salary and allowances.”
Earlier, on 28 August 2025, the government issued the ‘Government Primary School Teacher Recruitment Rules, 2025’. In addition to other positions, the rules included provisions for appointing teachers in music and physical education.
Following this, leaders of various religion-based political parties demanded the appointment of religious education teachers instead of music teachers at different meetings, seminars, and protest rallies. They also threatened to launch movements if the appointment of music teachers was not cancelled.
The rules issued in August mentioned four types of teachers: head teacher, assistant teacher, assistant teacher (music), and assistant teacher (physical education).
In the amended rules, only head teacher and assistant teacher positions were mentioned. Following this, in November, the interim government removed the provision for appointing teachers in music and physical education through another gazette notification.
