No Appointment as Head/Assistant Head Without 18 Years of Teaching Experience
The Ministry of Education is set to introduce a condition that no one will be appointed as head or assistant head in non-government schools, colleges, technical institutions, or madrasas without at least 18 years of teaching experience. A final decision on this may be taken today, Tuesday (3 March).
A source in the ministry told The Daily Campus on Tuesday that the proposed requirement includes a total of 15 years and 12 years of service experience for head and assistant head positions respectively. The ministry aims to prevent less-experienced individuals from entering these top institutional roles by tightening the criteria.
When contacted, Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division Muhammad Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Campus: “The matter has not yet been finalized. A final decision may be taken today (Tuesday).”
According to the existing policy for head and assistant head appointments:
- For the post of vice-principal, candidates must have at least a second-class or equivalent postgraduate degree from a recognized university, along with a minimum of 3 years of experience as principal of a higher secondary school, principal of a degree college, vice-principal of a degree (honours) or postgraduate college, or assistant professor in an MPO-covered position, plus a total of 12 years of teaching experience.
- For school-level head and assistant head positions, the latest MPO policy determines eligibility based on experience as principal or assistant head in secondary or lower-secondary schools.
- For lower-secondary school principal posts, candidates must have a graduate or equivalent degree with B.Ed., and at least 10 years of teaching experience in an MPO-covered indexed position in secondary or lower-secondary schools.
- For secondary school principal posts, candidates must have at least 3 years as indexed assistant head or lower-secondary principal, plus a total of 15 years of MPO-covered teaching experience. Alternatively, 3 years as senior teacher with a total of 17 years of teaching experience also qualifies.
The ministry’s move aims to ensure that only highly experienced educators hold leadership positions in non-government institutions.
