After a prolonged winter vacation that included the Great Victory Day and Christmas holidays, educational institutions across the country reopened today on the first day of the year. Regular academic activities resumed from Thursday (1 January) in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical institutions.

A spot check revealed that student attendance was notably high on the first day of the year in educational institutions in the capital Dhaka and various parts of the country. From morning onwards, primary schools, secondary schools, government and non-government colleges, madrasas, and technical institutions became lively with the footsteps of students. After the long break, students were seen full of enthusiasm and excitement as they reunited with classmates and teachers.

Previously, all types of educational institutions went on holiday in the last month of the year due to the winter vacation and several other breaks. The holiday started on different dates for primary schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical institutions.

Although primary schools were scheduled to begin vacation from 11 December, due to teachers’ agitation in schools where annual examinations could not be held on time, the holiday from 11 to 15 December (excluding Friday and Saturday, i.e., 3 days) was cancelled. As a result, many primary schools started their vacation from 16 December and ended on 25 December.

According to the secondary school holiday list, the last holiday of 2025 began on 14 December and ended on 28 December. Although 12 and 13 December (Friday and Saturday) were weekly holidays before that. After the holiday, the Junior Scholarship Examination for Class VIII started from 28 December to 31 December.

Government and non-government colleges also began their vacation on 14 December, which ended on 28 December. On the other hand, according to the holiday list for technical and madrasa education, government and non-government (independent, Ebtedayi, Dakhil, Alim, Fazil, and Kamil) madrasas across the country began their vacation on 14 December and it ended on 28 December.

It is worth mentioning that in mourning for former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, the government issued a gazette notification declaring classes and examinations suspended in all educational institutions on Wednesday (31 December) through an executive order on Tuesday (30 December).
