Law Department Leads in DUCSU’s VP, GS, AGS Races: Who’s Running from Where

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election’s draft candidate list has been published by the university administration. Initially, 462 candidates’ nominations have been declared valid by the DUCSU and Hall Parliament Election Commission. The highest number of candidates for Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), Assistant General Secretary (AGS), and other secretarial posts come from the Law Department. Analysis of the candidate list shows that 15 candidates from the Law Department are contesting for VP, GS, AGS, and secretarial posts. Following closely are the Arabic and Islamic Studies departments, each with 11 candidates contesting various posts.
At a press conference, Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin stated that 462 candidates have been initially validated, including 402 male and 60 female candidates. Additionally, 47 candidates are on the faulty list, with their nominations suspended. He noted that nominations were suspended due to errors in voter numbers, names, registration numbers, parents’ names, signatures, and similar issues. These candidates have until August 23, 2025, to appeal for verification.
For the VP post, 48 candidates from 30 departments are contesting. Among them are 3 from Political Science, 2 from Sociology, 3 from Arabic, 2 from English, 2 from Social Welfare and Research Institute, 1 from Development Studies, 1 from Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 6 from Islamic Studies, 1 from Television and Film Studies, 1 from Zoology, 2 from Philosophy, 1 from Linguistics, 3 from Geography and Environment, 1 from Psychology, 2 from Statistics, 1 from Management, 2 from Public Administration, 2 from Urdu, 1 from Persian Language and Culture, 1 from Marketing, 1 from Criminology, 1 from Communication Disorders, 1 from History, 1 from Islamic History and Culture, 1 from Law, 1 from Sanskrit, 1 from Japanese Studies, 1 from Japanese Language and Culture, 1 from Sculpture, and 1 from Applied Mathematics.
For the GS post, 19 candidates from 14 departments are competing. These include 1 from Law, 2 from Anthropology, 1 from Political Science, 2 from Social Welfare and Research Institute, 2 from Marketing, 2 from Peace and Conflict Studies, 1 from English, 1 from English for Speakers of Other Languages, 1 from Geology, 1 from Bangla, 1 from Statistics, 2 from Philosophy, 1 from Women and Gender Studies, and 1 from Public Administration.
For the AGS post, 28 candidates from 23 departments will compete. These include 1 from Japanese Studies, 2 from Philosophy, 1 from International Business, 2 from International Relations, 1 from Arabic, 1 from Statistics, 1 from Social Welfare and Research Institute, 3 from Sociology, 1 from Mass Communication and Journalism, 1 from World Religions and Culture, 1 from Islamic Studies, 1 from History of Art, 1 from Public Administration, 1 from Law, 1 from Peace and Conflict Studies, 1 from Chemistry, 1 from Finance, 2 from Accounting and Information Systems, 1 from Botany, 1 from Theatre and Performance Studies, 1 from Population Sciences, 1 from Marketing, and 1 from Physics.
