BRAC University, ACU Deepen Ties for Research and Sustainable Cities
BRAC University has taken a significant step toward global academic collaboration by holding high-level talks with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) in London on October 26. The meeting, aimed at advancing research, resilient societies, and sustainable urban development, was led by BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar and Registrar Dr. David Dowland. Representing ACU were Secretary General Professor Colin Riordan and Head of Communications and Public Affairs Dr. Laura Pritsch.
The discussions focused on aligning both institutions’ shared vision of using higher education as a catalyst for social progress and sustainability. Key areas explored included building resilient civic communities, developing sustainable cities, and expanding research exchange initiatives to address pressing global challenges. The partnership seeks to amplify applied research and policy impact across the Commonwealth.
Professor Riordan expressed strong support for the collaboration and confirmed plans to visit Bangladesh in 2026 to continue dialogue with BRAC University and other ACU member institutions in the region. This follow-up visit is expected to deepen ties and explore joint programs in education and climate action.
Since joining the ACU in 2021, BRAC University has been an active member of the world’s oldest international university network, founded in 1913. With over 500 members worldwide—including 16 in Bangladesh—the ACU facilitates knowledge sharing, capacity building, and progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BRAC University contributes particularly to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The London meeting was part of BRAC University’s broader strategic visit to the UK to expand global partnerships, promote innovation from the Global South, and enhance international academic engagement. The collaboration underscores BRAC University’s growing role in shaping sustainable and inclusive futures through higher education.
