Anthropology Department student and Jahangirnagar University unit Chatra Dal leader Md. Saiful Islam Roni has died from burn injuries sustained in a gas cylinder explosion. He passed away on Sunday morning (1 February) while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka. Ashulia Police Station OC Md. Nur Alam Siddik confirmed the death to The Daily Campus, stating that Roni died on Thursday and his body was taken to his village for burial.

Chatra Dal central organisational secretary Amanullah Aman expressed grief on his Facebook account, writing that Roni, from the 47th batch of the Anthropology Department and a member of the JU Chhatra Dal convening committee, had wanted to meet him just four days earlier. Aman described the loss as tragic and offered condolences.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night (27 January) around 9 pm when a gas cylinder exploded on the second floor of a building in Islamnagar, adjacent to the JU campus. Four people were injured in the blast and subsequent fire: Saiful Islam Roni, Abdus Sobhan Ray, Hasinur, and Rahat. Roni and Hasinur were critically injured and immediately transferred to the Dhaka burn institute, while the other two received initial treatment locally. Roni suffered severe burns to his back, hands, and one eye, with doctors estimating 70% of his body affected. University medical centre part-time physician Amitabh Das confirmed the severity of the injuries among those brought for initial care.
