DU admission topper Anonno Ganguly committed suicide
Anonno Ganguly, who topped the Dhaka University admission test (D Unit) for the 2021-22 academic session, has died by suicide.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday night (31 January) at her family home in Bazar Para of Kotchandpur municipal town, Jhenaidah district.
Anonno was the eldest daughter of retired Professor Pradyut Kumar Ganguly of Kotchandpur Municipal Women’s Degree College and Radharani Bhattacharya, headmistress of a local school. She had a younger sister, Lithi Moni Ganguly, who is currently studying at Dhaka University.
Anonno had shown exceptional academic brilliance from an early age. She secured talent pool scholarships in the PSC, JSC and SSC examinations. However, she faced mental health challenges during her college years, which kept her away from studies for nearly five years.
She made a remarkable comeback by securing the first position in the DU admission test for the 2021-22 session and was admitted to the English Department.
Her success story received wide media coverage at the time, highlighting her resilience and extraordinary talent.
Family members believe her long-standing mental health struggles may have contributed to the decision to end her life.
Kotchandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Asaduzzaman said the matter is being investigated seriously. The body has been sent for autopsy, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after receiving the post-mortem report.
