NCP Leader Demands EC Reconstitution and Local Government Elections

Alauddin Muhammad, Joint Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has called for the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC) and the holding of local government elections. He also demanded punishment for those involved in what he termed the “fascist era’s” illegal elections. The demands were made in a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 20.
In his statement, Alauddin Muhammad wrote, “The Election Commission must be reconstituted, reforms implemented, and local government elections held. If delaying the national election is an excuse, announce a date for the national election and proceed with organizing local government elections. Those responsible for the illegal elections of the fascist era must be swiftly brought to justice.”
Previously, the NCP accused the Election Commission of favoring a particular political party and reiterated its demand for the commission’s reconstitution. At a press conference held at the NCP’s temporary central office on Tuesday, party leaders announced plans for a protest march in front of the Election Commission on Wednesday to press these demands.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has consistently demanded that national elections be held before local government elections, with its leaders voicing this stance on multiple occasions. In contrast, Jamaat-e-Islami has supported holding local government elections first since the beginning.
