Tarique Rahman Elected Leader of the House, Assumes Office as Prime Minister
The BNP Parliamentary Party (BPP) has unanimously elected party Chairman Tarique Rahman as Leader of the House. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced this to reporters after the BPP meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. This paves the way for Tarique Rahman to form the new government as Prime Minister, with ministers scheduled to take oath at 4pm at Parliament's South Plaza.
Fakhrul described the moment as historic, noting that after years of repression, destruction of democracy, and an ineffective parliament, a credible election has been achieved through people's sacrifices. He stated that with a parliamentary majority, the party elected its young leader Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul expressed hope that the country will move forward significantly under his leadership.
The BPP also decided that BNP MPs will not take duty-free cars or government plots. Newly elected BNP MPs were sworn in earlier by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the oath-taking room of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The 13th parliamentary election was held on 12 February. Out of 300 seats, results for two were suspended and one cancelled due to a candidate's death. In the remaining 297 seats, BNP won 209, Jamaat-e-Islami 68, NCP 6, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish 2, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Ganosamhati Andolon, and Khelafat Majlish one each, with independents taking seven.
Tarique Rahman retained Dhaka-17 and vacated Bogura-6, where a by-election will be held.
