Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has drawn attention to the limitations of the country’s health system, citing the case of Fatema, a long-time domestic helper of Khaleda Zia’s family.

Speaking at a programme, the Prime Minister recounted how Fatema’s pregnant relative faced complications in Barisal. The local hospital lacked necessary facilities like an incubator, leading to an immediate referral to Dhaka. However, due to their connection with the Prime Minister’s family, quick intervention was possible. The patient ultimately received proper treatment locally without needing to travel to the capital.

PM Tarique Rahman questioned why ordinary citizens must rush to Dhaka even for basic medical care and why mofussil hospitals lack essential equipment and services. He stressed that not everyone has “VIP connections” like Fatema.

He said, “Not everyone is Fatema, nor is everyone related to Fatema.” “No One Should Have to Be ‘Fatima’s Relative’ to Get Basic Health Care.” He added that if doctors and hospital authorities were a bit more careful and responsible, many such problems could be avoided.

The Prime Minister called upon doctors and health workers to be more diligent in their duties. He also mentioned discussing the overall security situation in hospitals with the Home Minister, Health Minister, and relevant secretaries to improve the situation.

In conclusion, he urged the government and all stakeholders to build a health system where no citizen needs special influence or connections to receive treatment — every person should get minimum healthcare as a basic right.
