The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting temporary gusty or squally winds reaching speeds of 45–60 km/h across Dhaka and eight other regions by this evening. These storms, expected to blow from the west or north-west, may be accompanied by rain or thundershowers.

In light of these conditions, river ports in the affected areas have been advised to hoist Inland Riverine Warning Signal No. 1. The forecast was detailed in a bulletin released by the BMD's Storm Warning Center earlier today, Wednesday (May 13).

According to the meteorological report, the regions likely to be affected by the stormy weather include Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra, Tangail, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet. Residents and river vessel operators in these areas are urged to exercise caution as the sudden increase in wind speed and lightning activity poses potential risks.

The general weather forecast released for the next 24 hours indicates that light to moderate rain is likely to occur in many places across the Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. A few locations in other divisions may also experience scattered rainfall.

Furthermore, the BMD warned of the possibility of moderately heavy to heavy falls in certain areas within the Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions during this period. While rain provides relief from the heat, the Department continues to monitor the atmospheric conditions for any further escalations.

The long-term outlook for May suggests a volatile month for Bangladesh. One or two low-pressure areas are expected to form in the Bay of Bengal during the second half of the month, with the potential for at least one to intensify into a depression or a cyclone. Additionally, severe Kalbaishakhi (Nor'wester) storms and intermittent heatwaves are expected to persist throughout the month.
