Cold Wave Grips 10 Districts: Rajshahi Records Season’s Lowest Temperature
A severe cold wave continues to sweep across northern and northwestern Bangladesh, with Rajshahi recording the season’s lowest temperature of 7°C this morning, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Meteorologist Omar Faruk told The Daily Star that the cold wave is currently affecting 10 districts: Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Rangamati, Jashore, Kushtia, and Chuadanga.
While both daytime and night-time temperatures may rise marginally today, the overall weather pattern is expected to remain largely unchanged until January 11. “There is little chance of any major variation during this period. Temperatures are likely to begin rising from January 12,” Faruk said.
Classification of Cold Waves According to BMD criteria:
- Mild cold wave: Minimum temperature between 10°C and 8.1°C
- Moderate cold wave: 8°C to 6.1°C
- Severe cold wave: 6°C to 4.1°C
- Very severe cold wave: Below 4°C
The current readings in several districts fall in the moderate to severe category, with Rajshahi’s 7°C marking the lowest so far this winter season.
Dense fog has also reduced visibility in many areas, disrupting road, river, and air traffic, while vulnerable groups—particularly children, the elderly, and low-income communities—are facing significant hardship.
