The new government of Bangladesh has decided to appoint a new Chief Prosecutor for the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Current Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam is set to be removed from the post, with Advocate Aminul Islam reportedly being considered as his replacement.

According to reliable sources, Tajul Islam has already been informally informed about the decision to replace him. When contacted for comment, Tajul Islam declined to make any statement. No official comment has been received from government spokespersons as of the time of this report.

Advocate Aminul Islam previously served as a member of the legal team defending BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in her corruption cases, where she was convicted and imprisoned.

The International Crimes Tribunal is currently conducting trials against Awami League politicians and members of law enforcement agencies accused of crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising, including killings and injuries of protesters and bystanders. That uprising ultimately led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.

Additionally, cases related to enforced disappearances that occurred between 2009 and 2024 are also under trial at the Tribunal. So far, three cases have been completed.

Just three days ago, Tajul Islam told journalists that he had received no indication at that time of any change to himself or other members of the prosecution team.
