In a remarkable twist of fate, a student from Mushuli Degree College in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh learned on Sunday that he had actually passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination last year — just as he arrived at the college to fill out the form for a retake in one subject.

Touhid Mia had believed he failed in one subject after checking the online result last year. Devastated but determined, he spent the past year preparing to sit for that subject again. His family and relatives were also under the impression that he had failed. On Sunday afternoon, he went to the college with the necessary fee and documents to submit the retake form.

While verifying his information and papers in the college office, assistant clerk Helal Uddin suddenly discovered Touhid’s original HSC pass certificate from the previous year, which had been lying in the office records. The online result had apparently shown incorrect information, leading to a year of unnecessary mental stress and preparation for a retake that was never required.

Touhid told reporters: “I appeared for the HSC from Mushuli Degree College last year. When the results were published, I checked online and saw that I failed in one subject. My family and relatives also knew about it. So I studied hard for a year and came to the college with money from my family to fill the form for re-examination in that subject. Then, while checking my documents, office assistant Helal Uddin Sir found my certificate.”

Helal Uddin, the office assistant, said: “Touhid came to fill the form on Sunday afternoon. While searching through the papers, I found his original pass certificate from last year’s HSC.”

The acting principal of the college, Aminul Haque, said: “Touhid is a student of our college. He came to fill the form and suddenly learned he had passed last year. We are all delighted to hear this.”

Touhid and his family are now preparing to pursue higher education with the certificate in hand, turning what was a year of hardship into a moment of unexpected joy and relief.
