DU Graduate Khalid Hits 1 Million Followers by Teaching English with Humour
Khalid creates humorous videos to teach English in an entertaining way and shares them on his Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms. His content has gradually gained popularity among young people, particularly school and college students, as well as university students.
More than three and a half years after starting his journey, the former University of Dhaka student has continued to grow his audience. His page, ‘Khalid Speaks’, now has more than one million followers. Following the milestone, he shared the story of his journey and personal life in a post on his page.
In a post published on his verified Facebook page on Friday (October 16), Khalid wrote, “One million people follow me on Facebook. It feels strange but beautiful! Sometimes I wonder whether I deserve so much respect and love. Perhaps not. Honestly, when 100,000 people followed me, the joy was very different, just like fulfilling a wish with the first money you save in your youth.”
He said the journey began more than three and a half years ago when he thought he could share what he knew and learn more in the process.
“That is how it started, and now I see that the journey has not been bad. The way people, from mainstream media to those in remote areas, have embraced me is beautiful. Perhaps I could spend the rest of my life eating one meal at a time at the homes of my well-wishers,” he wrote.
Khalid also shared personal milestones, including his marriage and the birth of his daughter.
“My daughter, Liana Mariam Khan, is now 68 days old. Allah has kept her well. I got married in 2024, and I am now 28. Our eight-year relationship has reached fulfilment. I had made a commitment and kept it,” he wrote.
He expressed gratitude to his wife, Fariha, recalling how she once suffered pain in her neck and arms while holding the camera for him.
“But then, my convincing skills must be good. Otherwise, who would want to marry an unstable young man, almost half-dark in complexion and of the same height as her, at 67 inches?” he joked.
He added that although his wife was not named Kalyani, a name associated with well-being, she had brought him much happiness. He also prayed for marriage to become easier for others, writing that Allah had made it easy, while society had made it difficult.
Khalid said he had initially secured an opportunity to study law at the University of Rajshahi. His father wanted him to become a judge, but after getting into the University of Dhaka, he had told his family that he would join the foreign affairs cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service.
“I enrolled at Dhaka University saying that I would become a foreign cadre officer, InshaAllah. But now my father, mother and maternal uncle sometimes call me a ‘betrayer’, out of disappointment. I remain silent because what they say is partly true,” he wrote.
He expressed deep respect for his parents, saying they had brought him into the world and taught him to remain grateful to others. He also remarked that many people in Bangladesh were ungrateful and financially dishonest.
Khalid named his younger sister, Nuha, known online as ‘This is Nuha’, as one of his biggest sources of inspiration. After battling cancer for six years, she secured admission to the Law Department at the University of Dhaka.
“If Nuha does not give up, why should I? We came from the same womb, after all!” he wrote.
Thanking his well-wishers, Khalid asked them to keep him in their prayers so that he could continue teaching English with a smile and speaking out against wrongdoing.
