Trivial Mess Dispute Turns Violent: IB Senior Beats Junior, Lands Him in Hospital

A petty argument over meal counts escalated into a brutal clash late Friday night between a senior and junior student at Islamic University’s (IU) Finance and Banking Department, leaving the junior hospitalized with severe injuries.
The incident unfolded around 11:00 PM at a mess on PTI Road, involving senior Monirul Islam Rohan (2019-20 session) and junior Sajib (2021-22 session). Sajib’s roommate Nayan (Environmental Science and Geography, 2021-22) was also hurt.
Both, along with several IU students, lived at the mess near former MP Hanif’s house. The dispute arose when juniors proposed reducing the monthly meal quota from 45 to 40 due to Puja holidays; a poll favored it, but Rohan dissented, sparking a verbal spat.
When Nayan arrived, Sajib informed him, and they confronted Rohan upstairs. Tensions boiled over into a fistfight, with Sajib alleging Rohan punched his eye repeatedly, twisted his arm, kicked him against tiles, and landed 20-30 blows even after he fell.
Bleeding profusely, Sajib was rushed to Kushtia Sadar Hospital; his eye injury required stitches.
Rohan countered, “After the argument, I left. Sajib and Nayan came to attack me on the third floor, leading to a scuffle. Later, 20-25 people, including Islami Chhatra Shibir president Anik and Chhatra Dal members from Islami College, beat me in front of my grandmother—my finger split open.”
He added, “They threatened me to leave the mess by morning, saying they’d beat me again. I couldn’t go to the hospital due to fear. I’ve informed the department chairman and proctor; they’ll act.”
House owner Tohid Iqbal Khan said, “Both are equally at fault. A small meal issue turned into a brawl. I tried mediating, but outsiders they called caused chaos. It could’ve been resolved peacefully, but they blew it out of proportion.”
Sajib demanded justice: “As a senior, he charged at me multiple times. My juniors pulled him out, but when we went up, he shoved Nayan down and pummeled me mercilessly—twisting my arm, punching my face and eye, kicking my leg against the wall. I want fair investigation.”
Nayan added, “He hurled abuses for voting for 40 meals, shoved me down when we talked. He beat Sajib senseless; I was stunned. We called seniors and rushed Sajib to hospital. My head injury caused clotting.”
Police have not commented, but the university proctor’s office is investigating amid rising campus tensions over petty disputes.
