Expelled BNP Leader Abdur Rouf Gets BNP Nomination for Satkhira-2
Abdur Rouf, the expelled Satkhira district BNP Joint Convener, has been nominated by the BNP for Satkhira-2 (Sadar-Debhata) in the upcoming national election, despite his 2024 expulsion for defying party directives.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir officially announced the preliminary list of 237 candidates today, including Rouf's name.
Rouf was expelled on April 25, 2024, for contesting the Alipur Union Parishad election against BNP orders. The expulsion letter stated, "You are expelled from all levels, including primary membership, for disobeying party decisions." Copies were sent to Khulna division and Satkhira leaders.
Yesterday, Rouf insulted Islamic speaker Kabir bin Samad at Alipur Checkpost Madrasa event, prompting protests by local ulama and Tauhidi groups.
Satkhira BNP declared, "Abdur Rouf is not a BNP leader or activist. He violated party orders during the fascist regime by contesting the UP election."
Rouf's nomination has angered supporters of rival candidate Abdul Alim, who blocked roads, burned tires, and protested at Binirpotua Bypass on Monday night, halting traffic. They suspended the blockade until Tuesday afternoon but warned of escalation if unchanged.
Protesters included Labsha UP BNP President Shafiqul Islam, Sadar Upazila BNP leader Atiyar Rahman, and district Swechchhasebak Dal Joint Convener Anarul Islam. They demanded withdrawal and legal action.
Rouf told reporters at the hospital, "They are drug addicts and terrorists. Recover their weapons. We informed police; OC assured arrests by night."
The Satkhira-2 nomination highlights ongoing BNP internal tensions amid alliance talks for the remaining 63 seats.
