For decades, a popular belief has persisted that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure visible from space. This notion has been perpetuated through various media, educational materials, and even some astronauts' accounts. However, recent clarifications from space agencies and astronauts have debunked this myth.

The Great Wall of China, an architectural marvel spanning over 21,000 kilometers, was built over centuries to protect the Chinese states and empires against invasions. Its immense length and historical significance have led to the folklore that it can be seen from the Moon or low Earth orbit with the naked eye. However, astronauts, including NASA's Eugene Cernan and China's Yang Liwei, have stated that the Great Wall is not visible from space without magnification. According to Scientific American, the Wall's visibility from space is a myth, as its materials blend with the natural landscape, making it less distinguishable than other structures like highways or airports.

A 2004 photograph from the International Space Station, taken with a 180mm lens, was claimed to show the Great Wall, but this indicates it’s not visible to the naked eye. The myth likely originated from a 1932 Ripley's Believe It or Not! cartoon, which claimed the Wall was "the mightiest work of man, the only one that would be visible to the human eye from the moon." This has been disproven, yet the myth persists in popular culture.

While the Great Wall is an extraordinary feat of human engineering, it is not visible from space without aid. This serves as a reminder to verify widely accepted "facts."
