Tagore’s 84th Death Anniversary Marked on 22nd Srabon

Bangladesh observes the 84th death anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, revered as the 'Bishwakobi' (World Poet), today, August 6, 2025, coinciding with the 22nd of Srabon in the Bengali calendar. Tagore passed away on August 7, 1941, at age 80, but the occasion is traditionally marked on Srabon 22 in Bangladesh.
Born on May 7, 1861 (25th Baishakh, 1268), in Kolkata’s Jorasanko mansion to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Tagore was the youngest of 13 surviving children. His prolific seven-decade career produced over 2,000 songs, creating the distinct genre of Rabindra Sangeet, alongside eight novels, 84 short stories, and numerous poems, plays, and essays. His best-known works include Gitanjali, Gora, and Ghare-Baire. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for Gitanjali. His compositions, “Amar Shonar Bangla” and “Jana Gana Mana,” serve as the national anthems of Bangladesh and India, respectively. In 1921, he founded Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, envisioning a global learning hub rooted in Indian traditions.
Cultural organizations across Bangladesh are commemorating the day with music, recitations, discussions, and reflections on Tagore’s legacy. Chhayanaut will host a tribute program at 7:00 PM at its Dhanmondi auditorium in Dhaka. On August 7, Bangla Academy will hold a seminar and cultural event at 4:00 PM in its Kobi Shamsur Rahman Seminar Room. State-run and private television channels, including Bangladesh Television (BTV), will air special programs highlighting Tagore’s contributions.
