Mental health is often misunderstood, with many myths still circulating in 2025. GenPsych recently addressed several of these misconceptions to promote better understanding.

Myth 1: Only certain people suffer from mental health disorders. The reality is that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Approximately one in five American adults experiences a mental health issue each year.

Myth 3: Anxiety and depression are just phases. For many, these conditions are serious and persistent, requiring professional treatment. Conditions like generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder are not something one can simply "get over."

Myth 5: Once you’re diagnosed with a mental health disorder, you can never recover. This is false. With proper care, many people with mental health conditions can achieve stability and lead fulfilling lives. Recovery is possible and should be the goal of treatment.

Myth 6: Seeking help for mental health issues is a sign of failure. On the contrary, seeking help is a sign of strength and responsibility. It’s essential to consult professionals who can provide evidence-based treatments to aid in recovery.

By dispelling these myths, we can work towards a society that’s more understanding and supportive of mental health. Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
