Government Abolishes Monthly Prepaid Meter Charges
he government has decided to abolish monthly rental and maintenance charges for prepaid electricity meters. State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, announced the decision while speaking with journalists on Sunday, March 29.
He noted that long-standing consumer dissatisfaction regarding additional charges on prepaid meters prompted the move. After reviewing the situation, the ministry decided to fully withdraw the meter charges to ensure more consumer-friendly services and transparency within the power sector.
Currently, prepaid meter users have a fixed amount deducted as meter rent or maintenance costs during every recharge. Consumers have long questioned why they were required to continue these payments even after the initial cost of the meter had been recovered.
The Ministry of Power stated that past lack of transparency and inflated procurement costs for meters had been unfairly passed on to the public. This new policy aims to reduce the financial burden on citizens and ensure that electricity services remain affordable and efficient for all.
